Group from Chalmaaro, Peshawar
This was the first group of students which took part in the Open Doors Literacy Classes. The students were thrilled, happy and were excited for the classes. After 110 days of classes, the course was completed. Today, that group of students is able to do reading newspaper, writing and do numbers. A combined effort from both the students and teacher effectively lead to a fantastic result.
Students:
1. Adnan
2. Omar
3. Rawasiya
4. Tajalla
5. Aimen
6. Sumbel
7. Sadia
Before the Session:
Before the classes, things were different. These seven students, two boys and five girls, belong from a small village in remote areas of Peshawar known as Chalmaaro. There was no proper facility of education and school was far distant which was for boys only. Girls had a hard time studying. In fact, they would always stay at home and end up getting married at early ages which would put a full stop to their lives. So a proper, safe and healthy environment with more facilities and quality education was needed which could give them a chance to get educated and run in the modern age. A person from the local area quoted, "The boys leave for school but they don't go to school and run away playing in the fields. We can't have a proper check on them. We have to go far distant to earn livings for our family". A villager woman said, " We can't send our girls to local schools because the environment is not safe. One dirty spot on their character and no one would marry her. We can't risk her life for such a thing. If we are given a safe place and quality education, we would be happy to send our kids there." Sumbel, participant of the first group of ODLP said, "Me and my sisters wake up early in the morning and do nothing but our household chores all day long and take care of the house. This is our life and this is how we live. We want more from our lives and we want to see what's in it for us".
After the Session:
At the end of 110 days of project, it was fantastic. The students felt accomplished and were excited to take it further in their lives. They actually needed a strong base and thanks to ODLP which made it possible. Adnan, participant from the group said, "I never felt so happy in my life. Today, I am more determined and want to build on this base". Rawasiya said, "This is brilliant. All my life, I never thought I would ever be able to read or write but ODLP made it happen. It was such a great experience and I definitely want to be a part of further activities from this project". Aimen quoted, "The environment of the classes was brilliant. Every day, we would come in the morning and before going to bed on that day, we would be so excited to go to school the other morning. I helped my other siblings at home and it really gave me a chance to smile and stay happy. It changed my character and today, I am a completely different person with at least being able to read and write. THANK YOU ODLP!!!!
