Group from Torkham, Peshawar
Torkham is the place where Pakistan and Afghanistan connects. It acts as a bridge between the two countries. There are remote villages that lie in this region. Hassan Saeed, our Country Coordinator, went on survey there to check on the literacy situation and get quotations. Likely to other villages, this area was also deprived from education. ODLP to the service, yet again. They recruited five girls of various ages and families about which is listed below.
STUDENTS:
1. Abida
2. Basmeera
3. Hira
4. Palwasha
5. Parwana
ABOUT THE STUDENTS:
These girls belong to the same colony. They have acquaintance with each other so it was easy for them to jell well with each other. Abida, Basmeera, Palwasha and Parwana are 12 years old while Hira is 14 years old. Hira has a little background of literacy since she went to school in her early age but she was soon taken out of school after she was promised to the boy of local merchant, who is pretty well off. Though Hira's parents had the vision of educating her, they were pretty speechless in front of the family of the boy as they've already given their word to them. Their engagement has happened and there's no way back now, although, Hira's family mourn their decision of engaging their daughter. As for Hira, she is a very bright individual. She has dreams to climb high and achieve but for being a girl in a village like Torkham, this doesn't become a possibility. All these girls have joined the class to educate themselves about the basic literacy and numbers which'll help them in their walks of life and how they'd move forward in future when they have children.
BEFORE THE CLASSES:
The students live a pretty ordinary life. It's hard to comprehend their visions because it's very early for them to high. But you can easily infer that they have something special. They help their families in the daily household work. They wouldn't take shower for days because they were not aware of hygiene and cleanliness. They'd talk in a rude manner. They won't know the basic manners and respecting their elders. In the afternoon, they'd read the basic Quran. That's pretty much how their life was. ODLP introduced them to a completely new life with having classes on daily basis and other interesting activities that help them not only learn, but groom up as an individual as well.
AFTER THE CLASSES:
So far, things are going fantastic. These girls come to classes daily with a bright smile on their faces. They have a reason to wake up, clean themselves up, have their breakfast and come to classes. Their life has become more organized and healthy. The feeling of learning and progressing can be easily inferred from the delight on their faces. One of the girls say, "I wish you would have come early to help us". The other girl says, "Do we have opportunities after this course, because I have a vision to help my villagers". These girls are fantastic. They're learning quickly and they're getting hang of things very easily. ODLP has been serving yet another group of girls and doing their best in keeping up the good work. Kudos!
