Group from Shahi Bala, Peshawar
After a great start to the Open Doors Literacy Project and doing a fantastic job with Group One, we extended the network and took students from another village named Shahi Bala, which is in remote areas of Peshawar. The students were found in that region due to connections of the Group one students in that village so the students of this group already had a little idea about what to expect. Remember, they were completely ignorant and by the end of the program, they were able to read and write.
STUDENTS:
1. Aaliya
2. Farkhanda
3. Nabiullah
4. Azmat
5. Wajidullah
6. Farhaana
7. Nishat
ABOUT THE STUDENTS:
The group consisted of 4 females and 3 boys. It was a very interesting group since it had a 20+year old woman and two 30+year old women. The balance in the group was outstanding and students adjusted so well. The rest were normal kids who never had a chance in their lives to attend school. ODLP gave them a chance to participate in this program and enabled them to learn.
BEFORE THE SESSION:
Before the session, life of these people is just dull. Since they are villagers and that's how their lives are, they wake up early in the morning and take care of the household chores. The boys are set free and they wander around in fields or in streets to play various games with their friends. Same is the case with this group as well. Farkhanda, a 39 year old quoted, "It's very important for me to take care of my house and make sure I take care of my kids and house. Learning at this stage is outrageous and I don't think there's any as such program which can enable us to learn. I definitely want to learn. I am old but I have passion. I want to be able to read newspaper too." Farhaana, 35 year old quoted pretty much the same and said that they have turned old and learning at this stage is not possible. The kids were excited, thrilled, and happy to be a part!
AFTER THE SESSION:
At the end of 100 days of project, the students achieved what seemed impossible to them. Today, they can read the newspaper, do the writing, read easy Urdu books and stay tuned with the world. They can understand what's happening in their country and where it's leading. Farkhanda said, "I can't believe it's real and it happened. I am an extremely religious person and my husband never allowed me to go outside the house but the trust ODLP developed is fantastic". Farhaana said, "I can check the weather on the newspaper, the adds and stay tuned with the current affairs. Now I can choose my leaders carefully and vote for the right person". Farhaana and Farkhanda also have kids, they are married. Now, they help their kids with their school work and learn from them as well as teach them. They have got their chemistry right and this network of education and learning from each other would never die. These students are also now able to do basic numbering and can write as well. The kids will hopefully take this base long and build on it. ODLP enlightened yet another bright seven people group!
