The Open Doors Literacy Project is an initiative to educate and empower the village boys, girls and women of Pakistan.
Our Pakistan Coordinator, Hassan Saeed, travels to villages in the suburbs of Peshawar, Pakistan to teach a 100-day course in basic Urdu literacy and numeracy. Each class meets six days a week for two hours in a home volunteered for the purpose, since most of the villages have no school.
Students graduate from the course able to read, write, and do basic math—and some have begun micro-businesses. All emerge with a greater sense of possibility and purpose.
Open Doors Literacy Project was inspired by an interview with a village girl named Mashal, which was conducted as research for a book about global youth by our US Coordinator, Gayle Kimball. The book manuscript is ready for you to critique and add your observations: Email for chapters. A Pakistani newspaper, Dawn, reported "Pakistan is crippled by an education emergency." One in 10 of the world's out-of school children is a Pakistani. Of those age 6 to 16 who are in school, only 35% can read a story. Many schools even lack a building (21,000 schools).
Donations to Open Doors Literacy Project help cover the cost of workbooks, transportation, and Hassan’s salary, by which he is earning his tuition to university. Please read an article about Hassan and ODLP on:

Please explore our website further to meet the teacher, the students, and to read about the book and interview that inspired the project. Also consider buying our fundraiser cookbook of quick healthy recipes. All the profits go to ODLP. Look under "More" for the contents and further details.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
Can you think of a school who would like to partner with a literacy program in Pakistan and arrange Skype sessions which will be very interactive and two-way learning from both ends? Teacher Hassan writes, "The students will explore different situations; ask questions from each other and as a result, do various writing activities. This will be a brilliant experience for schools abroad to learn from the class setup here. We invite schools to sponsor a 100-day literacy program, perhaps raising money through creative ideas such as making a calendar to sell, collecting small change or raffling off donated gifts like a bicycle. In return, students can Skype with the Pakistani students they sponsor and learn firsthand about another culture." Please find us on our website : http://opendoorsliteracyproject.weebly.com/
